Since the early 1900's apples have been grown here at Wairepo. William, my grandfather painstakingly turned the original swampy marshland into productive and fertile soil. The initial Wairepo Orchard still grows upon this land.
William started our apple tradition with the original plantings of:
Today the orchard operation has grown considerably and now includes 5 additional orchards in the Wairepo and surrounding Moutere Valley areas. Our sons, Simon and Matthew now manage the orchards full-time.
The apple harvest season runs from mid-February to May with all apples handpicked and packed on-site. We employ up to 80 staff during the busy harvest period.
Most of the apples grown at Wairepo are for the export market and end up on the shelves of supermarkets in the United Kingdom and United States of America.
Just let us know if you would like to join Richard on an orchard tour and see how our fruit begins its international journey.
